Maria Auxiliadora (Campo Belo, MG, 1938 - São Paulo, SP, 1974)

Maria Auxiliadora was a painter. She was self-taught in the visual arts and began her artistic production around 1954. In 1968, she joined Solano Trindade's group in Embu, São Paulo, and held her first solo exhibition. Posthumously, the artist's work is highlighted in the book *Mythopoetics of 9 Brazilian Artists*, by Lélia Coelho Frota.

Reviews

"Maria Auxiliadora's paintings are characterized by their great vitality and chromatic vibration. She possesses the magical Afro-Brazilian sense and a wealth of rhythmic and coloristic creation that is most fascinating. Her work combines authentic and profound experiences of popular life with her imaginative construct of chromatic and linear architectures, fusing a beautiful decorative ability with a convincing and true popular feeling. She manages to unite reality and dream. Over two years ago, Maria Auxiliadora enriched her oil painting with collage elements. Later, she abandoned collage and began using only the relief obtained with plastic paste. She thus managed to considerably intensify the dynamism of her compositions and give them the flavorful character of works of popular craftsmanship, becoming one of the most striking figures of our primitivism".
