Resistant Memories
GILBERTO SALVADOR
The 1960s were extraordinary. They were turbulent years of intense transformation in the arts, science, and customs. After the enormous dominance of abstract movements, a new figuration emerged, imbued with the events of its time and a strong critique of consumerism. Gilberto Salvador lived this decade intensely, revealing himself as an avant-garde artist.
They were revolutionary years in thought and action. Years of bossa nova, of new cinema. Of the new architecture that shaped Brasília. Years of the space race, Sputnik, and the moon landing. Of the miniskirt, the Beatles, and the birth control pill. But also, the Cold War, the Vietnam War, the military coup in Brazil, and the struggles of democratic resistance.
Gilberto Salvador's work revives with critical intelligence and humor the decade that took the world beyond modernity.
"Resistant Memories," organized by Galeria Frente, brought together essential works by the artist, all produced in the 1960s.
