SEE ARTS

Galeria Frente has been a presence, having participated in seven editions of SP-Arte – São Paulo International Art Festival, since 2016. And we are in the second edition of the Brazilian Routes Fair, last year we presented Brazilian modernism.

In this edition, the curatorial section will present "The Masters of Tapestry in Brazil and Informal Abstraction." We will highlight the two movements that were prominent during the same period between the 1950s and 1960s, but which followed parallel histories. The history of Brazilian artistic tapestry only began to change slowly from the first decades of the 20th century, with the Modernist Movement and its proposal for the renewal of the arts in the country as a reference point. But it was with Genaro de Carvalho [1926-1971] in 1955, when the artist created the first tapestry studio in the city of Salvador, that tapestry in Brazil reached new heights, gaining international recognition.

It is generally agreed that the adoption of abstractionism in Brazil began in the mid-1940s, but it was from the "I International Biennial of São Paulo" (1951) onwards that artists began to gain greater visibility, one of their greatest representatives being the artist Manabu Mabe. Although these movements had a prominent presence during the same period, little or nothing was exhibited together side by side. Galeria Frente's goal is to broaden the public's knowledge of these two currents.
